val d'orcia

Val d’Orcia is a small region in Tuscany’s south-east. Principally covering the province of Siena, Val d’Orcia stretches to the border of the main mountain in Southern Tuscany: Mount Amiata. Only a few kilometres from Umbria’s borders, the region is famous for its hilly landscape and picturesque towns.

The Val d’Orcia valley is best known for its beauty and artistic heritage, culture and environmental history. In 2004, Val d’Orcia was made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in celebration of both its splendour and importance as a unique Italian landscape.

The most popular and indeed cultured cities in Val d’Orcia are Montalcino, Pienza, San Quirico d’Orcia, Radicofani and Castiglione d’Orcia. Other towns Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo and Monticchiello also draw visitors with their scenery and local products, in particular the local variety of Pecorino and the Brunello di Montalcino, a fantastic DOC wine.
