A particularly large region, Tuscany’s climate usually changes territory to territory and often depends on the geographic area and vicinity to land masses such as mountains or the sea.
The average temperature across the region is about 16°C, especially in coastal areas. However, this figure tends to rise quite noticeably as you travel further inland, for example in the Chiana Valley temperatures can rises as high as 40°C during the summer.
Rain in Tuscany is scarcest in the territory of Maremma Grossetana and the Argentario coastline, where they are lucky to record 500ml of rainfall a year.
On average, Tuscany receives about 600-700ml of rain each year, especially in the Orcia and Chiana Valleys in the provinces of Siena and Arezzo. However, on the Apuane Alps and Tosco-Emiliano Apennines 2000ml of rain can easily fall in one year.
Snow in Tuscany is a relatively rare occurrence. Frequent and heavy snow is really confined the the Apennines territory and on Amiata Mountain, but on rare occasions also in the hilly territories and the coastal areas of the Maremma Grossetana. If you’re looking to ski, head to Amiata Mountain, there are a lot of different ski slopes but they’re well-kept and fantastic for beginners!
