Capalbio in Southern Tuscany may not be the area’s most recognised holiday destination, but it is one of its most beautiful. After decades of quiet, tourist-free days, the local are only just getting used to the many Italian and international tourists who now flock here to immerse themselves in the incredible beaches and landscapes which surround Capalbio.
A chance to reacquaint yourself with the traditional, countryside lifestyle that is lost in so many of Italy’s other cities, Capalbio is a picturesque medieval town with a rich heritage and an even richer culture. Like much of the Maremman region it finds itself in, Capalbio has the perfect fusion of breathtaking scenery and enviable history. Once an important city during the time of the Etruscans and Roman Empire, Capalbio’s countryside is spotted with necropolises, sacred monuments and ruined cities centuries old.
Quickly becoming a hot summer vacation spot for the country’s rich and famous, Capalbio also has 12km of beaches. Under environmental protection, these beaches are on the shores of the Tyrrehnian Sea, where the water is crystal clear and the sand is soft and dark.
For such a small city, Capalbio has an almost dizzying list of hotels and accommodation. However, if you are looking for a hotel that is fitted with all the modern comforts but still infused with the traditional Tuscan way of life we suggest Hotel Agrialbergo. Surrounded by parklands, the hotel has an array of rooms, all of which have a bathroom, TV, fridge and an independent garden entrance. With breakfast included and the Maremman hills as its backdrop, the hotel is only 5km from Capalbio and its beaches but still secluded enough to ensure a stress-free vacation.
Hotel Argialbergo is also close to the Tarocchi Garden. A unique piece of modern art, this garden is filled with statues designed by famous artist Niki de Saint Phalle.
